Sr. Information/Interaction Designer (IA/IXD)

Are you fanatical about flows? And not just the happy paths but those icky, cumbersome, not-so-nice corners that no one likes to talk about.

Do you scrutinize layouts and interactions and obsess over not only how your products are used but why?

Is the best product design a design that can be shipped? And can you architect that design in a fast-paced, iterative environment?

Are you ready to bring the next-generation of online travel products and experiences to the world?

If so, then Expedia, the world's largest travel company, wants to talk to you. We are looking for a Sr. Information/Interaction Designer to join our Global Product User Experience Design group.

Responsibilities:

As a Sr. Information/Interaction Designer, you will be a key contributor to a focused but nimble UX team dedicated to creating efficient, effective and delightful product experiences that artfully unify customer needs with business goals.  You will:

  • Work collaboratively within an agile product team made up of product managers, engineers, and fellow UXers to deliver world-class product experiences through iterative releases
  • Define the navigation, information organization, interaction design, and user flows for a range of optimizations and new features of a product or business throughout the entire lifecycle
  • Partner with UX leads, visual designers, researchers, content specialists and client-side engineers to optimize the user flow as well as the psychological aspects of the layout and interface elements based on usability, intuitiveness, consistency, business metrics, and time to market
  • Develop and communicate use cases, states and detailed interface specifications through both verbal direction as well as physical assets such sketches, wireframes, interface layouts or lo-fi prototypes
  • Recommend and establish updates to the overall product interface guidelines based on your daily project work
  • Describe and present your methods, design explorations and tradeoff rationale along with a recommendation to peers, team partners, business stakeholders and UX leadership
  • Estimate work effort and define needed deliverables
  • Evaluate competitive and innovative products and interaction design approaches to identify best practices and encourage innovation
  • Mentor other interaction designers and advocate best practices

Requirements:

To be a successful Sr. Interaction Designer, you must be a detailed- and process-oriented systems thinker and sound information architect but have a knack for creative and visual problem solving, a love for experimentation and an ability to deliver quickly. You must have:

  • Advanced ability todocument solutions through user flows, storyboards, wireframes, personas, prototypes, test cases, or written specifications and user stories
  • Advanced experience with fundamental user-centered, usability, and interaction design principles
  • Advanced ability to articulate creative interactive solutions, at times with minimal or no preparation
  • Advanced concepting skills and original thinking with an eye for innovation
  • Advanced proficiency in industry tools such as Visio, Omnigraffle, or Axure
  • A professional and personal portfolio of useful and delightful interface and interaction design solutions
  • Strong knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and other web scripting languages and an understanding of how interaction choices translates in development (ability to write not required)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Experience:

While we recognize that there is not one path to becoming a great Sr. Information/Interaction Designer, we look for:

  • More than 5 years professional experience with information architecture and interaction design for software interfaces
  • Proven experience designing and architecting a range of websites and/or applications, especially consumer-facing and transactionally-focused interfaces
  • Degree in a relevant field (HCI, Communications, interactive design)

And although not required, it is an advantage if you can demonstrate:

  • Experience designing low and high fidelity interface prototypes
  • Experience working within agile design and development teams
  • Samples of information visualization and multiple form interface design (e.g., mobile, tablet)
